Mentoring Mothers

When a child is born, so is a mother.

“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.”― Osho

Why Did No One Tell Me?

“Everyone talks about pregnancy and birth, but no one prepares you for life after the baby arrives.”

“I knew motherhood would be challenging, but I didn’t expect it to be this hard!”

“I feel like everything about me has changed, and I don’t even recognize myself anymore.”

“Other moms seem to have it all figured out—why am I the only one struggling?”

“I wanted this—I wanted to be a mom—so why am I not enjoying it like I thought I would?”

“I never expected to feel this exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, and alone.”

“I’m terrified of repeating the patterns from my childhood.”

“I thought bonding would come naturally, but some days, I just don’t feel connected to my baby at all.”

Matrescense, A New Perspective

The good news is that these thoughts and feelings can be a normal part of becoming a new mother. Normal, not optimal. They are an indicator of a profound passage now known as Matrescence (sounds like adolescence, right?)

Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother, the journey to birth the Mother.

This is the developmental journey of a woman moving through preconception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy or adoption, to the postnatal period and beyond. Similar to adolescence, it involves profound changes in every aspect of a woman’s sense of self: physical, emotional, social, cultural, spiritual, and psychological.

Understanding this intense time of change as a developmental stage destigmatizes the experience and creates a more compassionate and accepting environment for women to change, explore and shape their lives according to their own personal experiences.
